BODMAS Questions

How to Solve BODMAS Questions and Simplification Questions

BODMAS is a rule that tells us the correct order to solve math problems with multiple operations. If we don’t follow BODMAS, we might get the wrong answer.

BODMAS Rule

  1. Brackets → Solve inside ( ), { }, [ ] first.
  2. Orders → Solve powers (², ³) and roots ().
  3. Division & Multiplication → Left to right.
  4. Addition & Subtraction → Left to right.

Examples of BODMAS Simplification

Example 1: Nested Brackets

Problem:
12 + {6 − [3 × (4 − 2)]} ÷ 2

Solution:

  1. Innermost bracket: (4 − 2) = 2
    → 12 + {6 − [3 × 2]} ÷ 2
  2. Next bracket: [3 × 2] = 6
    12 + {6 − 6} ÷ 2
  3. Curly bracket: {6 − 6} = 0
    12 + 0 ÷ 2
  4. Division: 0 ÷ 2 = 0
  5. Addition: 12 + 0 = 12

Final Answer: 12

Example 2: Powers and Division

Problem:
(5² − 4 × 3) ÷ (6 − 2²)

Solution:

  1. Solve powers first:
  • 5² = 25
  • 2² = 4
    (25 − 4 × 3) ÷ (6 − 4)
  1. Multiplication inside bracket: 4 × 3 = 12
    (25 − 12) ÷ (6 − 4)
  2. Subtraction inside brackets:
  • 25 − 12 = 13
  • 6 − 4 = 2
    13 ÷ 2
  1. Division: 13 ÷ 2 = 6.5

Final Answer: 6.5

Example 3: Mixed Operations with Fractions

Problem:
8 ÷ 2 × (2 + 2) − 4² ÷ 4

Solution:

  1. Bracket first: (2 + 2) = 4
    8 ÷ 2 × 4 − 4² ÷ 4
  2. Power (Order): 4² = 16
    8 ÷ 2 × 4 − 16 ÷ 4
  3. Division & Multiplication (left to right):
  • 8 ÷ 2 = 4
  • 4 × 4 = 16
  • 16 ÷ 4 = 4
    16 − 4

Subtraction: 16 − 4 = 12

Final Answer: 12

Example 4: Complex Nested Brackets

Problem:
20 − [5 + {8 − (3 × 2)}] × 2

Solution:

  1. Innermost bracket: (3 × 2) = 6
    20 − [5 + {8 − 6}] × 2
  2. Curly bracket: {8 − 6} = 2
    20 − [5 + 2] × 2
  3. Square bracket: [5 + 2] = 7
    20 − 7 × 2
  4. Multiplication: 7 × 2 = 14
  5. Subtraction: 20 − 14 = 6

Final Answer: 6

Key Tips for BODMAS Simplification Rule

1.Always start from the innermost bracket.
2.Solve powers/roots before ×, ÷, +, −.
3.If same priority (like × & ÷), solve left to right.
4.Double-check calculations to avoid mistakes.
